The Works of Mevlana, Mathnawi
Mathnawi is an important work written by Mawlana who had been the educator of hearts during his whole life. It is a didactic work that teaches people the importance of loving human beings and being an example for others. It also emphasizes the importance of the subject such as good conduct, honesty, generosity, working hard, modesty, patience, helping others, wishing others good luck, being truthful, eating lawful morsels, praising God, performing prayers etc. It consists of hundreds of stories provided so that people should take lessons from them. Its greatest sources were the Qur'an and the Prophetic traditions. In the Mathnawi besides the subjects of Tafsir and Hadith, there are subjects belong to Islamic Law, Theology, Sufism, History and Medicine. Apart from these, there is also mention of customs and practices of that time. The stories of the Mathnawi were taken from the various works such as Kalilah and Dimnah; Asrarnamah and llahinamah written by Farid al-Din Attar; Qisasal-Anbiya' of Sa'labi; Ihya'al-Ulum al-Din of al-Ghazzali; Maqalat of Shams. Mawlana also included in his Mathnawi very few anonymous stories that were told among people.
